Appendectomy
Removal by surgery of the appendix, the small worm-like appendage of the colon (the large bowel). An appendectomy is performed because of probable appendicitis, inflammation of the wall of the appendix generally associated with infection.
SYMPTOMS
Dull pain near the navel or the upper abdomen that becomes sharp as it moves to the lower right abdomen. ..., Loss of appetite., Nausea and/or vomiting soon after abdominal pain begins., Abdominal swelling., Fever of 99-102 degrees fahrenheit., Inability to pass gas.
CAUSES
A blockage in the lining of the appendix that results in infection is the likely cause of appendicitis. The bacteria multiply rapidly, causing the appendix to become inflamed, swollen and filled with pus. If not treated promptly, the appendix can rupture.
