Diseases
Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (Cervical Dysplasia)
Cervical dysplasia is a precancerous condition in which abnormal cell growth occurs on the surface lining of the cervix or endocervical canal, the opening between theuterus and the vagina.
SYMPTOMS
The most common sign of hyperplasia is abnormal uterine bleeding. If you have any of the following, you should see your health care provider: bleeding during the menstrual period that is heavier or lasts longer than usual.
CAUSES
A common virus called human papillomavirus (hpv) causes cervical dysplasia. Hpv is a sexually transmitted virus, and there are hundreds of strains. Some are low-risk and cause genital warts. Others are high-risk and cause cell changes that can turn into cervical dysplasia and cancer.
