Apgar Score
An index used to evaluate the condition of a newborn infant based on a rating of 0, 1, or 2 for each of the five characteristics of color, heart rate, response to stimulation of the sole of the foot, muscle tone, and respiration with 10 being a perfect score.
SYMPTOMS
Baby is not breathing or breathing is very weak., Skin color is bluish or pale., Heart rate is low., Muscle tone is poor or reflexes are weak., Too much acid is in the blood (acidosis), the amniotic fluid is stained with meconium (first stool)
CAUSES
Anything that causes a baby to become oxygen deprived can cause the baby to have a low apgar score after birth. Listed below are a few of the conditions that can cause a low apgar score. Placental abruption, which occurs when part of the placenta tears away from the uterus.
