Carpal tunnel syndrome in science. carpal tunnel syndrome. Chronic pain, numbness, or tingling in the hand, caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It can be caused by repetitive bending and extension of the wrist, as in keyboarding, or by medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

SYMPTOMS

Pain areas: in the hands, wrist, or forearm
Also common: hand numbness, sensation of pins and needles, hand clumsiness, hand pain at night, hand weakness, or wrist weakness

CAUSES

• diabetes.
• thyroid dysfunction.
• fluid retention from pregnancy or menopause.
• high blood pressure.
• autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.
• fractures or trauma to the wrist.
