Frambesia (Yaws Disease)

A highly contagious tropical disease that chiefly affects children, caused by the spirochete treponema pertenue and characterized by raspberrylike sores, especially on the hands, feet, and face. Also called frambesia.

SYMPTOMS

A single, berry-like sore on the skin is the first sign of yaws. Without treatment, sores begin to spread. Yaws may eventually cause disfigurement and disability.

CAUSES

Yaws is an infection caused by a form of the treponema pallidum bacteria. It is closely related to the bacterium that causes syphilis, but this form of the bacterium is not sexually transmitted. Yaws mainly affects children in rural, warm, tropical areas, such as, africa, western pacific islands, and southeast asia.
