Frontotemporal Dementia

Frontotemporal dementia (frontotemporal lobar degeneration) is an umbrella term for a diverse group of uncommon disorders that primarily affect the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain — the areas generally associated with personality, behavior and language.

SYMPTOMS

  • Poor judgment.
  • Loss of empathy.
  • Socially inappropriate behavior.
  • Lack of inhibition.
  • Repetitive compulsive behavior.
  • Inability to concentrate or plan.
  • Frequent, abrupt mood changes.
  • Speech difficulties.

CAUSES

It's several disorders that affect the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Personality, emotions, behavior, and speech are controlled in these areas of the brain. These disorders cause the brain to lose brain cell function. Frontotemporal dementia is sometimes called frontal lobe dementia.
