Grand Mal Seizure
A grand mal seizure — also known as a generalized tonic-clonic seizure — is caused by abnormal lelectrical activity throughout the brain. Usually, a grand mal seizure is caused by epilepsy.
SYMPTOMS
- Muscular: stiff muscles, rhythmic muscle contractions, or muscle quiver
- Sensory: aura or pins and needles
- Cognitive: mental confusion or confusion following a seizure
- Also common: blue skin from poor circulation, drooling, fainting, headache, leaking of urine, lip and tongue biting, or sleepiness
CAUSES
The seizure has two stages. Loss of consciousness occurs first and lasts about 10 to 20 seconds, followed by muscle convulsions that usually last for less than two minutes.
