Hemorrhagic Cyst (Cephalohaematoma)

A cephalohaematoma (british english) or cephalohematoma (american english) is a hemorrhage of blood between the skull and the periosteum of any age human, including a newborn baby secondary to rupture of blood vessels crossing the periosteum.

SYMPTOMS

  • Cephalohematoma occurs when blood accumulates under the periosteum. This is a thin layer of tissue that separates the scalp from the bone of the skull itself. This happens during labor when the skin head attached to the body wall was born as a baby still pushed forward. This can cause tearing of blood vessels that connect the periosteum and skull. While this can happen naturally, it can be driven by excessive force during birth, as with a brace or vacuum, as mentioned above.
  • The result is a slippery lumps with a firm limit and feels just as if there were small balloons filled with water under the skin of the head.
