Hirschsprung Disease (Congenital Aganglionic Megacolon)

Hirschsprung's disease involves missing nerve cells in the muscles of part or all of the large intestine (colon). Present at birth, it causes difficulty passing stool. Hirschsprung disease is an important condition. It is the commonest cause of lower intestinal blockage (obstruction) in the newborn period and later in infancy and childhood,hirschsprung disease is a cause of chronic constipation.

SYMPTOMS

The main symptom is a newborn's failure to have a bowel movement within 48 hours after birth. Other symptoms include a swollen stomach and vomiting.

CAUSES

It sometimes occurs in families and might, in some cases, be associated with a genetic mutation. Hirschsprung's disease occurs when nerve cells in the colon don't form completely.Nerves in The colon control the muscle contractions that move food through the bowels.
