Intraventricular hemorrhage (ivh), also known asintraventricular bleeding, is a bleeding into the brain's ventricular system, where the cerebrospinal fluid is produced and circulates through towards the subarachnoid space. It can result from physical trauma or from hemorrhaging in stroke.

SYMPTOMS

  • Apnea, when a baby stops breathing.
  • Bradycardia, when a baby has a low heart rate.
  • Pale or blue coloring, called cyanosis.
  • Weak suck.
  • High-pitched cry.
  • Seizures.
  • Swelling or bulging of the fontanelles, the soft spots between the bones of the baby's head.
  • Anemia, or low blood count.

CAUSES

High-grade intraventricular hemorrhage (ivh) is an important cause of severe cognitive and motor neurologic impairment in very low birth weight infantsand is associated with a high mortality rate. The risk of ivh is inversely related togestational age and birth weight.
