Bipolar disorder was formerly called manic depression. It is a form of major affective disorder, or mood disorder, defined by manic or hypomanic episodes (changes from one's normal mood accompanied by high energy states)

SYMPTOMS

At the extreme, manic individuals can experience distorted or delusional beliefs about the universe, hallucinate, hear voices, to the point of psychosis

CAUSES

Hormonal problems: hormonal imbalances might trigger or cause bipolar disorder. Environmental factors: abuse, mental stress, a "significant loss," or some othertraumatic event may contribute to or trigger bipolar disorder.
