Napkin Dermatitis
Napkin dermatitis is caused by overhydration of the skin, maceration, prolonged contact with urine and feces, retained diaper soaps, and topical preparations and is a prototypical example of irritant contact dermatitis.
SYMPTOMS
- Skin signs. Napkin Dermatitis is marked by red, tender-looking skin in the diaper region — buttocks, thighs and genitals.
- Changes in your baby's disposition. You May notice your baby seems more uncomfortable than usual, especially during diaper changes
CAUSES
Irritant napkin dermatitis develops when skin is exposed to prolonged wetness, increased skin ph caused by the combination, and subsequent reactions, of urine and feces, and resulting breakdown of the stratum corneum, or outermost layer of the skin.[6] this may be due to diarrhea, frequent stools, tight diapers, overexposure to ammonia, or allergic reactions.
