Neuropathic Pain
Chronic pain resulting from injury to the nervous system. The injury can be to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) or the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord).
SYMPTOMS
- Gradual onset of numbness, prickling or tingling in your feet or hands, which can spread upward into your legs and arms.
- Sharp, jabbing, throbbing, freezing or burning pain.
- Extreme sensitivity to touch.
- Lack of coordination and falling.
CAUSES
For many patients, the intensity of their symptoms can wax and wane throughout the day. Although neuropathic pain is thought to be associated with peripheral nerve problems, such as neuropathy caused by diabetes or spinal stenosis, injuries to the brain or spinal cord can also lead to chronicneuropathic pain.
