Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) is a lung disease characterized by chronic obstruction of lung airflow that interferes with normal breathing and is not fully reversible. The more familiar terms 'chronic bronchitis' and 'emphysema' are no longer used, but are now included within the copd diagnosis.
SYMPTOMS
- Cough: can be dry or with phlegm
- Respiratory: frequent respiratory infections, shortness of breath, or wheezing
- Whole body: fatigue or inability to exercise
- Also common: chest tightness, loss of muscle, or weight loss
CAUSES
The risk factors of copd is increased by smoking tobacco, secondhand smoke, air pollution, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and a few other conditions. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, and infectious diseases can contribute to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
