Osteopenia

Mild thinning of the bone mass. Osteopenia represents A low bone mass and is not as severe as osteoporosis. Osteopenia results When formation of new bone (osteoid synthesis) is not sufficient to offset normal bone loss (osteoid lysis).

SYMPTOMS

Typically, there are no symptoms, unless the condition progresses to osteoporosis. Symptoms of osteoporosis include back pain, loss of height, a stooped posture and easily fractured bones.

CAUSES

  • Genetics (familial predisposition to osteopenia or osteoporosis, a family history of early bone loss, and other genetic disorders)
  • Hormonal causes, including decreased estrogen (such as in women after menopause) or testosterone
  • Smoking
  • Excess alcohol
  • Thin frame
