Otitis Externa
Infection of the skin covering the outer ear canal that leads in to the ear drum, usually due to bacteria such as streptococcus, staphylococcus, or pseudomonas. Swimmer's ear is usually caused by excessive water exposure. Infection with a fungus may also occur.
SYMPTOMS
- Pain areas: in the ear
- Also common: feeling of fullness in the ear, hearing loss, itching, redness, or tenderness
CAUSES
- A bacterial infection – usually by bacteria called pseudomonas aeruginosa or staphylococcus aureus.
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis – a common skin condition where the naturally greasy areas of your skin become irritated and inflamed, which can sometimes affect the ears.
