Ovarian Cysts
A fluid-filled sac in the ovary. The most common type of ovarian cyst is called a follicularcyst. It results from the growth of a follicle. A follicle is the fluid-filled cyst that contains an egg. In some cycles, this follicle grows larger than normal and does not rupture to release the egg.
SYMPTOMS
Most ovarian cysts don't cause symptoms. In some cases, menstrual irregularities, pain during intercourse or irregular bowel movements can occur.
CAUSES
However, sometimes a follicle doesn't release an egg, or it doesn't discharge its fluid and shrink after the egg is released. If this happens, the follicle can swell and become a cyst. Functional cysts are non-cancerous (benign) and are usually harmless, although they can sometimes cause symptoms such as pelvic pain.
