Shock Lung
Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a medical condition occurring in critically ill or critically wounded patients characterized by widespread inflammation in the lungs. Ards is not a particular disease; rather, it is a clinical condition triggered by various pathologies such as trauma, pneumonia, and sepsis.
SYMPTOMS
- Respiratory: respiratory distress, fast breathing, shortness of breath, or rapid breathing
- Whole body: low oxygen in the body or fever
- Also common: blue skin from poor circulation, coughing, high carbon dioxide levels in blood, muscle weakness, or organ dysfunction
CAUSES
Inflammation, such as that caused by sepsis, causes endothelial cell dysfunction, fluid leakage from capillaries and impairs drainage of fluid from the lungs. Elevated inspired Oxygen concentration often becomes necessary at this stage, and may facilitate a 'respiratory burst' in immune cells.
