Diseases
Sleep Paralysis
An infectious disease primarily found in children that is caused by transmission of the human parvovirus b19 through the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms include fever and a skin rash that begins on the cheeks and spreads to other body surfaces. Also called. erythema infectiosum.
SYMPTOMS
Episodes involve not being able to speak or move while falling asleep or upon waking. This usually lasts one or two minutes and is often frightening.
CAUSES
During rapid eye movement (rem) sleep the brain has vivid dreams, while the muscles of the body are essentially turned off. While sleeping, the muscles are unable to move so that the person won't be able to act out dreams with their body. Sleep paralysis happens when a person wakes up before rem is finished.
