Urge Incontinence (Overactive Bladder)

A sudden involuntary contraction of the muscular wall of the bladder causing urinary urgency, an immediate unstoppable urge to urinate. It is a form of urinary incontinence (the unintentional loss of urine) and affects about 1 in 11 adults, particularly older adults.

SYMPTOMS

The urge to urinate may be difficult to control and lead to the involuntary loss of urine (incontinence). It may be embarrassing or limit activity.

CAUSES

  • Bladder cancer.
  • Bladder inflammation.
  • Something blocking urine from leaving the bladder.
  • Bladder stones.
  • Infection.
  • Brain or nerve problems, such as multiple sclerosis or stroke.
  • Nerve injury, such as from a spinal cord injury.
