A hyperextension and flexion injury to the neck, often a result of being struck from behind, as by a fast-moving vehicle in a car accident.

SYMPTOMS

Pain areas: in the neck, arm, back, muscles, or shoulder
Whole body: dizziness or vertigo
Also common: difficulty focusing, headache, muscle spasms, nerve injury, sensation of pins and needles, sleep disorder, stiff neck, or tenderness

CAUSES

Neck strain is often just called whiplash. Although it's usually associated with car accidents, any impact or blow that causes your head to jerk forward or backward can cause neck strain. The sudden force stretches and tears the muscles and tendons in your neck.
