Diseases
Hydrocephalus (Congenital Hydrocephalus)
Congenital hydrocephalus is a buildup of excess cerebrospinal fluid (csf) in the brain at birth. The extra fluid can increase pressure in the baby's brain , causing brain damage and mental and physical problems. This condition is rare.
SYMPTOMS
Downward deviation of the eyes, called "sunsetting"
- Irritability.
- Seizures.
- Sleepiness.
- Very large head or a head that's growing very quickly in relation to the rest of the body.
- Vomiting.
CAUSES
Aqueductal stenosis – the most common cause of congenital hydrocephalus is an obstruction called aqueductal stenosis. This occurs when the long, narrow passageway between the third and fourth ventricles (the aqueduct of sylvius) is narrowed or blocked, perhaps because of infection, hemorrhage, or a tumor.
