Non Cancerous Colloid Thyroid Nodule

Colloid nodules, also known as adenomatous nodules or colloid nodular goiter are benign, noncancerous enlargement of thyroid tissue. Although they may grow large, and there may be more than one, they are not malignant and they will notspread beyond the thyroid gland.

SYMPTOMS

Complications associated with thyroid nodules include:

  • problems swallowing or breathing. Large nodules or a multinodular goiter — an enlargement of the thyroid gland containing several distinct nodules — can interfere with swallowing or breathing.
  • hyperthyroidism. ...
  • problems associated with thyroid cancer.

CAUSES

Benign thyroid tissue (non-cancerous) can be consistent with hashimoto's thyroiditis, a colloid nodule, or a thyroid cyst. This result is reported from approximately 60% of biopsies. Cancerous tissue (malignant) can be consistent with diagnosis of papillary, follicular, or medullary cancer.
